Percy's father assures him of his support and praises him for showing true heroism. Percy makes plans with Annabeth for their future.

In the beginning of the novel, Percy Jackson suffers from amnesia and stumbles upon Camp Jupiter where he meets several Roman demigods. He, along with Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque, receives a prophecy from Mars and travels to Alaska to prevent the giant Alcyoneus from rising and to rescue the captured god Thanatos. After a successful mission, they return to Camp Jupiter to defend it from another giant, Polybotes, and his army. Following their victory, the demigods from Camp Jupiter encounter the delegation from Camp Half-Blood, who arrive in the flying ship called the Argo II. This book is set in June.

During their journey, they encounter Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, who warns them about the split between the Greek and Roman gods, indicating a growing civil war between the Romans and the Greeks. The group travels to Rome guided by the "Mark of Athena" to find the missing Athena Parthenos. They also rescue Nico di Angelo, but Annabeth and Percy are pulled into Tartarus by Gaea. Nico promises to get the other demigods to the "Doors of Death". This book is set between June and July.

In the mortal world, the remaining demigods search for the mortal side of the Doors in order to help open them. They also encounter Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano, a Roman demigod. Together with Nico and Coach Hedge, they leave Epirus, Greece, with the Athena Parthenos and use Shadow Travel to reach Camp Half-Blood. Once reunited, the original seven set sail for Greece, anticipating that Gaea's main force will gather there.

With the help of the gods, the demigods defeat the giants in Athens and then return to the battle at Camp Half-Blood. There, Leo sacrifices himself to defeat Gaea, but he is later resurrected by his bronze dragon, Festus, and sets off to find his crush, Calypso. Unaware that he is alive, both Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter mourn his loss, but they decide to become allies to prevent such a deadly war from happening again. This book is set in the second half of July.
