If you are a lover of English period romances, you will likely have read some of Jane Austen's works. Below we look at some of our team's favourite quotes from one of her best-known novels, the heady and romantic Pride and Prejudice.

"Pride and Prejudice" is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. It is one of Austen's most famous works and has remained immensely popular since its publication. Set in early 19th-century England, the novel explores themes of love, marriage, class, and social status.

"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!" – Miss Caroline Bingley

The story follows the protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet, the second of five daughters of a country gentleman. Elizabeth is witty, intelligent, and independent-minded, with a strong sense of morality. The novel begins with the arrival of the wealthy and eligible bachelor Mr. Charles Bingley in the neighborhood, along with his haughty friend, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

"Do anything rather than marry without affection" – Jane Bennet

As the plot unfolds, we witness the complex interactions and romantic entanglements that arise between the characters. Elizabeth is initially prejudiced against Mr. Darcy due to his aloof and prideful demeanor, while Darcy is equally disdainful of Elizabeth's lower social status and the behavior of her family.

"Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us." – Mary Bennet

However, as they continue to interact and circumstances force them into closer proximity, both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy begin to reassess their initial impressions of each other. Through a series of misunderstandings, revelations, and personal growth, they eventually overcome their pride and prejudice to acknowledge their true feelings for one another.

"I am the happiest creature in the world" – Elizabeth Bennet

"Pride and Prejudice" is celebrated for its sparkling wit, memorable characters, and incisive social commentary. It remains a beloved classic of English literature and has been adapted into numerous films, television series, and stage productions, ensuring its enduring popularity across generations.

"You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." – Darcy
