Our Review of
The Thursday Murder Club

"The Thursday Murder Club" by Richard Osman is a delightful blend of humor and mystery, set in a quiet retirement village where a group of sprightly senior citizens gathers to solve cold cases. At the heart of the story is the quirky and lovable cast—four retirees with a shared passion for solving crimes. Their unique personalities and sassy antics make for an entertaining read, as they navigate both the challenges of old age and the intricacies of murder investigations.

One of the standout aspects of the book is its gentle humor. The characters’ wit, paired with their unapologetic zest for life, brings a lightness to the story that avoids feeling overly flippant. Even as they engage in some rather questionable detective work, the seniors remain endearing. Osman strikes a balance between comedy and mystery, making the book enjoyable for both cozy mystery fans and those looking for a feel-good read.

The detectives in the book, tasked with keeping an eye on this unpredictable group of septuagenarians, are equally enjoyable. Their protectiveness over the group, mixed with a good-natured acceptance of the seniors' behavior, adds another layer to the story. This dynamic between the professionals and amateur sleuths gives the novel a heartwarming touch, as both sides develop a respect for one another.

As for the mystery itself, it starts off strong. The first half of the book keeps readers on their toes, teasing them with clues and red herrings. You can’t help but play armchair detective alongside the characters, trying to solve the case. However, the second half does get a bit convoluted, as suspicion falls on nearly every character at one point. While this keeps you guessing, it can also feel repetitive, as the novelty of being misled starts to wear thin.

That said, the conclusion wraps things up in a satisfying, if slightly drawn-out, way. The loose ends are tied up neatly, and while the plot may have lost some steam in the middle, the ending leaves you with a sense of closure and anticipation for the next installment in the series.

"The Thursday Murder Club" is an entertaining read, thanks largely to its cast of sweet, funny, and resourceful characters. With this being the first in a series, there’s plenty more to look forward to from these endearing detectives. It’s a cozy mystery with charm, humor, and just enough intrigue to keep you turning the pages.
