My Review of It Ends with Us
It Ends with Us transcends the confines of your typical novel to become a life-changing experience for those who can relate to its main character’s experiences. I know this is such a cliché, but I couldn’t put my tablet down from the moment I started reading; such was author Colleen Hoover’s grip on me. I’m a massive fan of the American author, and this explosive novel is undoubtedly her best (which says a lot, considering how good Verity and Ugly Love were).
This story's deeply personal, no-holds-barred nature makes It Ends with Us an unforgettably impactful work. Hoover’s courageous choice to retell her parents’ fraught relationship through a dramatic lens was a bold move that paid off, with countless people worldwide resonating and appreciating this author’s vulnerability and emotional sincerity.
The story follows Lily’s relationship challenges with the seemingly perfect man, Ryle. He’s charming, funny, and provocative—everything that one could wish for from a partner. But as this quickly moving relationship grows more profound, the cracks also begin appearing. Lily starts experiencing Ryle’s darker side, although she can’t see his behaviors for what they truly are.
Thankfully, Lily has Atlas, a truly good person who deeply cares for Lily and wishes nothing but her safety and happiness. A dangerous love triangle develops that pushes each member to the brink. Hoover expertly weaves these messy links between the three characters, and my heart rate remained distinctly elevated through some of the more intense scenes.
If you’re a fan of Colleen Hoover’s dynamic and challenging stories, you might be able to expect the type of story you’re in store for with It Ends with Us. However, newcomers to the American author’s literary world will be blown away by the emotional complexity, challenging morality, and deep characters in this human masterpiece.
It Ends with Us was recently cinematically adapted into a film with the same name, directed by Justin Baldoni. Blake Lively plays Lily Bloom, and director Justin Baldoni also plays Ryle Kincaid as the romantic lead, alongside Brandon Sklenar, who plays Atlas Corrigan.
I also recently read another Colleen Hoover book. Check out my review of Reminders of Him and grab a digital download for the post, too!
