Our Review of Shatter Me

Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me immediately captured my attention with its gripping narrative and amazingly defined world-building. We're introduced to Juliette Ferrars, a young lady with the morbid power to end the life of anyone she touches. The story is set in a dystopian world where her deadly ability is a double-edged sword, one that two warring factions would happily exploit.

That is, if she’s ever released from her prison, one she has spent 264 days in due to her mysterious power. One day, she’s released with the intent of being used as a weapon by one of the factions called the “Reestablishment.” Juliette then struggles to contain her dark powers when she’s forced into the role of super assassin.

I loved delving into Juliette’s inner thoughts and moral struggles, which Mafi brought to poetic reality. Perhaps this thoughtful writing style isn’t for everyone, but I always enjoy following the protagonist’s thought process as the story unfolds.

Juliette is just one of many unique characters, and each one’s development is incredibly satisfying. Each central character grows more fascinating throughout the book and even better across the entire Shatter Me series.

It’s not all gloom and doom, though, as Shatter Me has plenty of romance, and Juliette’s relationships are both intimate and heart-wrenching. I was hoping for slightly more complex charms from the main character in the romance department, but it does the job.

Another weaker element is the world-building. Dystopias are a very commonly used setting, and Mafi could’ve spent more time developing her twisted vision of the future. Regardless, I enjoyed reading Shatter Me and will pick up the sequel, Unravel Me.
