Our Review of The Serpent and the Wings of Night
Carissa Broadbent's The Serpent and the Wings of Night transports readers to a world where humans and vampires clash in a perilous struggle for survival. It is an exciting blend of fantasy romance and action. The main character, Oraya, is fierce, strong, and surprisingly nuanced. Although the stereotypical strong female archetype is present in her character arc, there is enough nuance to make her journey seem real. Even though it seems a little predictable at the end, readers find the layers of her personality that she adds by balancing her independence and tenderness when she meets Raihn to be compelling.
Broadbent also does not avoid morally challenging characters. For instance, Vincent embodies both light and dark facets, generating a sense of ambiguity that keeps readers alert. For readers who appreciate morally complex stories, this is a satisfying read because it is more nuanced than a story with simple heroes and villains. Oraya and Raihn's romance is genuine and unapologetically intense, and even the sultry moments are handled delicately so they enhance rather than overpower the narrative.
The little moments of nearly familial ties are also noteworthy, especially with the endearing vampire who adds coziness to Oraya's voyage. These fleeting moments of friendship give the narrative heart and provide readers with a moment's respite from the action.
Speaking of intensity, Oraya almost dies numerous times as a result of the story's unrelenting, occasionally almost too quick, pacing. Although this can be exciting, it does get monotonous at times, and the high-stakes scenarios sometimes seem to overwhelm the opportunity for more in-depth world-building.
However, the tempo keeps the pages turning, and the suspense increases with each new hurdle. However, it would have been good to have greater attention paid to the political and cultural context in a world as rich and complicated as Broadbent's. The story of Nyaxia woven through the trials is enthralling, and Broadbent does incorporate flashbacks and interludes to Oraya's background, which offer an intriguing added depth to the narrative.
