Our Review of
The Serpent and the Wings of Night

"The Serpent and the Wings of Night" by Carissa Broadbent is a thrilling mix of fantasy romance and action that pulls readers into a world where vampires and humans collide in a dangerous game of survival. Oraya, the protagonist, is fierce, resilient, and refreshingly complex. Her character arc isn’t free from the typical strong female archetype, but there’s enough depth to make her journey feel genuine. The way she balances her independence with vulnerability when she meets Raihn adds layers to her personality that readers find engaging, even if it feels slightly predictable by the end.

Broadbent doesn’t shy away from morally complex characters either. Vincent, for example, embodies shades of both light and dark, creating a sense of ambiguity that keeps readers on their toes. This isn’t a story of straightforward heroes and villains; it’s more textured, making it a satisfying read for those who enjoy morally gray narratives. The romance between Oraya and Raihn is heartfelt and doesn’t shy away from intensity, and even the steamy scenes are handled tastefully, adding to the story rather than overwhelming it.

What also stands out are the fleeting moments of almost-found-family connections, particularly with the sweet vampire character who brings warmth to Oraya’s journey. It’s these small glimpses of companionship that add heart to the story, giving readers a brief reprieve from the intense action. And speaking of intensity, the pace of the story is relentless, sometimes almost too fast, with Oraya nearly facing death countless times. While this can be thrilling, it does become repetitive, and at times, it feels like the high-stakes situations overshadow the chance for deeper world-building.

The pacing does, however, help keep pages turning, with each new challenge adding to the suspense. But, in a world as rich and complex as Broadbent’s, it would have been nice to see more focus on the cultural and political backdrop. Broadbent does include interludes and flashbacks to Oraya’s past, which add an intriguing extra layer to the story, and the tale of Nyaxia woven through the trials is captivating.

While "The Serpent and the Wings of Night" might remind readers of other popular fantasy romances, particularly with its Hunger Games-style trials and nods to Sarah J. Maas’s character dynamics, it still carves out its own space. It’s less about breaking new ground and more about delivering a familiar but enjoyable experience, which it does remarkably well. Some plot twists might be predictable, but the journey remains engaging and fun.

For readers looking for a completed series that doesn’t require battling for a copy or waiting for the next installment, this duet is a satisfying choice.
