Our Review of Iron Flame

If you're a fan of Fourth Wing, then you've probably been anticipating Iron Flame for some time. I'm happy that Rebecca Yaros's sequel to her 2023 masterpiece is just as epic. Rejoin Xaden and Violet for more high-stakes action and robust development of their relationships. 

You'll be happy that this novel starts right where the last ended, meaning you don't have to skip a beat. I can't talk about the story without spoiling anything, but just know that Iron Flame keeps the momentum going from Fourth Wing's last page. 

Amazingly, Xaden and Violet aren't the show's stars this time, at least not for me. The dragons, Tairn and Andarna, really brought Iron Flame to its emotive peak for me and many other series fans. They are surprisingly well-developed characters with lovable personalities and are brought to a central relevance. They're also incredibly funny and witty, with plenty of heart to make them some of my favorite characters in young adult fiction. 

Then there are new characters like the sarcastic Felix, who was the perfect addition to the ensemble (and another fan favorite). Iron Flame has some rather heavy moments, and Felix helps defuse some of the tension while adding a much-needed new perspective to the unfolding events.

However, not all characters are equally likable. Varrish, in particular, emerges as a figure of intense loathing, drawing comparisons to the universally despised Umbridge from the Harry Potter series. This mix of characters, both endearing and detestable, keeps the story dynamic and engaging.

Romance and relationships play a significant role in "Iron Flame," with Xaden and Violet’s relationship taking center stage. Their dynamic is marked by patience, trust, and a deep, realistic and satisfying connection.

The groveling, the reassurances, and the unwavering support they offer each other create a relationship that readers can root for. Violet’s insecurities, while potentially off-putting to some, are portrayed with nuance, making them understandable given her past experiences.

The side characters also shine, providing crucial support to the main narrative. Ridoc, Sawyer, Imogen, and Rhi are not just background figures but integral parts of Violet’s journey. Their camaraderie and loyalty add warmth to the story, and their interactions bring a sense of community that contrasts with the protagonists' more solitary struggles. These friendships add richness to the narrative, making the world of "Iron Flame" feel lived-in and real.

"Iron Flame" is not without its flaws. The execution of specific plot points may be messy to some readers, and the book’s pacing can feel overwhelming with the sheer amount of action packed into its pages. Yet, these imperfections do little to diminish the overall enjoyment.

The book’s ability to evoke strong emotions, from laughter to tears, is a testament to Yarros’ skill in crafting a story that resonates deeply with its audience. The reveals and the cliffhangers at the end are particularly brutal, leaving readers both satisfied and desperate for more.

In conclusion, "Iron Flame" is a worthy continuation of the series, offering a thrilling mix of action, romance, and character development. While it may not be perfect, its strengths outweigh its weaknesses, making it a must-read for genre fans. The story’s ability to draw readers in and keep them invested in the fate of its characters is what truly makes this book stand out.

Whether you’re in it for the dragons, romance, or high-stakes drama, "Iron Flame" delivers on all fronts, proving that imperfection can be utterly captivating sometimes.
