To avoid unwanted attention, Simon and Daphne pretend to court each other. Their fake courtship leads to real feelings, but complications arise when Daphne's brother demands that Simon marry her. Ultimately, Simon agrees to marry Daphne but confesses that he can never have children.
Daphne and Simon quickly marry. Violet tries to explain sex to Daphne, who initially believes Simon is impotent. However, they can have fulfilling sex. During their honeymoon, Daphne learns that Simon has been purposefully preventing her from having children by pulling out during sex. This causes a rift between them, and Daphne decides not to have sex with Simon as long as he does not want to have children. After two months, Daphne informs Simon that she is pregnant, but her period is delayed. They reconcile and decide to start trying for children. In 1817, Daphne gave birth to a boy, David.
In a second epilogue, it is revealed that at 41, Daphne becomes pregnant with a fifth child. She is visited by her brother Colin and his wife, who are seeking advice as they fear their child has a speech impediment. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca’s surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere thirty-six hours longer–the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin. But that was then... Now Michael is the earl, and Francesca is free, but still, she thinks of him as nothing other than her dear friend and confidant.
Michael dares not speak to her of his love… until one dangerous night when she steps innocently into his arms, and passion proves more potent than even the most wicked secrets...
