His punishment lands him with his Catholic relatives in Northumberland, where he meets his scheming cousin Rashleigh and the lively, quick-witted Diana Vernon, whose fate is tied to family expectations and religious duty.

A large part of "Rob Roy" is narrated in Scots dialect, a choice by Scott that enriches the story but also challenges readers.
