Our Review of
The House in the Cerulean Sea

In "The House in the Cerulean Sea," T. J. Klune paints a heartwarming and enchanting tale centered on Linus Baker, a forty-year-old case worker living a life of quiet isolation. His daily routine involves overseeing the welfare of children in government-sanctioned orphanages, an occupation that aligns perfectly with his methodical and unadventurous nature. Residing in a small house with only his devious cat and an old record collection for company, Linus’s world is turned upside down when he is summoned by the enigmatic and stern Extremely Upper Management for a top-secret assignment.

Linus’s new task is to evaluate the Marsyas Island Orphanage, home to six children who are considered exceptionally dangerous. This diverse group includes a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and, most startling of all, the Antichrist. Each child possesses unique powers and characteristics that society fears, but Linus is charged with determining whether these children are truly a threat or merely misunderstood.

The story unfolds as Linus arrives on the island, confronting his own deep-seated prejudices and fears. The children, each with their own quirks and stories, begin to reveal the complexity and innocence that lie beneath their feared exteriors. As Linus immerses himself in their lives, he starts to see beyond their labels and begins to understand their need for acceptance and love.

Central to the narrative is Arthur Parnassus, the orphanage’s enigmatic caretaker. Arthur is a steadfast guardian who will go to any lengths to protect his wards. As Linus and Arthur’s relationship deepens, it becomes clear that Arthur harbors his own secrets, ones that challenge Linus’s perceptions and beliefs. Their growing bond underscores the themes of acceptance and the courage to embrace the unknown.

The backdrop of Marsyas Island itself is almost a character in its own right, with its vibrant and mystical atmosphere enhancing the novel’s charm. The island serves as a sanctuary where the children can express themselves freely, away from the judgmental eyes of society. This setting provides a perfect contrast to Linus’s previously dull and regimented existence, highlighting the transformative power of the environment on his journey.

One of the standout aspects of Klune’s storytelling is his ability to infuse humor and warmth into a narrative that tackles heavy themes such as prejudice, fear, and acceptance. The characters are richly developed, each contributing to the story’s overall message of finding family in the most unexpected places. Fun fact: Klune was inspired by the idea of creating a story that reflects the struggles and triumphs of marginalized communities, a theme that resonates deeply throughout the book.

"The House in the Cerulean Sea" is worth reading for its heartfelt exploration of what it means to be different and the power of kindness and acceptance. It challenges readers to look beyond the surface and recognize the humanity in everyone, regardless of how different they may seem. Klune’s masterful storytelling and vivid world-building create an unforgettable tale that reminds us of the importance of compassion and the strength found in diversity. This novel is not just a story; it's a celebration of finding family where you least expect it and embracing the beauty of unconventional love.
