Our Review of The Silent Patient

Prepare to be gripped by Alex Michaelides' The Silent Patient, a tense psychological thriller that grabs me from the first page onward. This tale centres around Alicia Berenson, a celebrated painter who, for no apparent reason, brutally murders her husband. The hateful, extreme way she does so chilled me, followed by Alicia's ensuing behaviour. She stops talking permanently.

However, this story isn't told from her perspective. Rather, we rely on forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber's viewpoint as he doggedly pursues the truth behind Alicia's loss of words. Of course, Theo also has his own troubles, and I found it fascinating to see how their lives became enmeshed. Their relationship develops within the confines of "The Grove", the story's psychiatric centre. I loved how Michaelides wove these two characters' lives together, with Theo learning more about Alicia primarily through her diary.

Ultimately, this story is about human exploration, taking deep dives into its main characters' minds. Each one is layered with negative emotions and trauma, and I greatly enjoyed seeing how such conflicts shaped them. This psychological devotion is also a fantastic driver of the novel's suspense, and Alicia's quietness steadily reveals itself to contain all manner of disturbing secrets.

I was amazed to learn that The Silent Patient was Michaelides' first published novel, given the almost perfect nature of his writing and narrative skills. On deeper investigation, I discovered this author's fascination with Greek mythology and his time spent working in psychiatry with people suffering from mental health issues. Michaelides clearly took inspiration from the myth of Alcestis, with clear parallels.

If you liked The Silent Patient, you’ll probably enjoy The Secret History. Both books delve into complex characters and unravel dark secrets in ways that keep you guessing. The Secret History takes a closer look at a group of students caught in a web of deception, much like the intense psychological drama of The Silent Patient. If you appreciate a tense, slow-burn mystery, this one’s a perfect match.
