Our Review of The Adventures of Pinocchio
“The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi is a timeless tale that revolves around a wooden puppet named Pinocchio who dreams of becoming a real boy. Carved by the kind and humble Geppetto, Pinocchio is far from an obedient son. From the moment he’s brought to life, Pinocchio’s impulsive, disobedient nature gets him into all sorts of trouble, causing heartbreak and distress for Geppetto. The story follows Pinocchio’s tumultuous journey of self-discovery, where his mischief and gullibility lead him into dangerous and often surreal situations, from encountering tricksters to being swallowed by a shark.
Set in 19th-century Italy, this classic children’s novel is more than just a fantasy tale about a puppet. It reflects the values of the time—obedience, respect for elders, and the consequences of deceit. Geppetto, the elderly woodcarver, represents unwavering parental love, even when faced with Pinocchio’s relentless misbehavior. Meanwhile, Pinocchio’s many misadventures serve as lessons in morality, showing the importance of truth, hard work, and personal growth. From killing the talking cricket that tries to guide him to falling for a cat and fox's con game, Pinocchio’s poor decisions are met with severe consequences that mirror the harsh realities of life.
A fascinating element of “The Adventures of Pinocchio” is its ability to blend lighthearted fantasy with darker themes. Unlike the softened adaptations we see today, Collodi’s original Pinocchio is far from an innocent victim of circumstance. He is reckless, lazy, and prone to lying, with each lie literally growing his nose longer. Yet, despite these flaws, Pinocchio’s journey is one of redemption. He learns through his trials—being tricked, turned into a donkey, and ultimately saving his father from the belly of a shark. The transformation from puppet to real boy represents the moral growth that comes from taking responsibility for one’s actions.
One fun fact about the story is that Pinocchio’s mischief was initially intended to be more severe. Collodi originally planned for Pinocchio to meet a grim end as a warning to disobedient children. However, the character’s popularity led him to extend the story, giving it a much more hopeful conclusion where Pinocchio earns his humanity through his love for Geppetto and his willingness to make amends.
“The Adventures of Pinocchio” is worth reading because it remains a poignant reflection on human nature. Pinocchio’s character arc is a reminder that we are all capable of change, no matter how far we stray. The book’s unique combination of whimsy and cautionary lessons makes it a timeless read that appeals to both children and adults. Its richly imagined world and complex themes continue to inspire adaptations and interpretations, making it a cornerstone of children’s literature.
